Weekend Weather

The high that was supposed to bring easterlies last weekend stalled mid Tasman and the Easterlies only arrived Thursday, sorry about that!

The high pressure system has now crossed the North Island and light easterlies should continue until Saturday. By Sunday winds will turn to the northerly quarter and freshen.

Don't forget a northerly kicks offshore up to 20 degrees when it strikes the coast and it is very easy to kitefish from the west coast from North Cape to Muriwai in these conditions.

Kariotahi to Raglan can also be fished in northerlies with a moderate tack.

The areas between East Cape and Wellington should also be good for kitefishing once the winds shift to the north.

Fishing Tuna Pictures from South Africa by Andre Beneke

fishing tuna pictures

Here are some fishing tuna pictures taken recently. It was a good run with these fish taken by Andries Stucki Jr. and his friends on July 17.

The fish were caught while trawling with a deepsea motorboat approximately 20 kilometers offshore.

Unfortunately they were not taken by a kite, but I thought we would send the pics anyway.

Our windy season starts soon so I hope we can send you some kitefishing pics then.

Thanks for your newsletter, its appreciated. Congratulations on a superb win in the rugby against South Africa. Your guys were fantastic.

Regards, Andre Beneke

p.s. Hope you guys kick Aussie butt on Saturday in the rugby.

Bay of Plenty Report by Les Tasker

On July 19 there was a moderate southwest wind blowing and I fished my bottom longline rig at Harrisons cut at Papamoa.

I baited up my 24 hooks with mackerel and ran one set dead straight out during an outgoing tide.

No snapper were landed but I did manage to catch 8 good sized gurnard. Unfortunately I only had time for one set as I had to go to work mid afternoon.

I used the mackerel from my last catch for bait and the nighthawk kite, with a moderate tack, towed the line out the full 1000 metres with ease.

My son Ian also put out his super kite powered bottom longline rig with 25 hooks baited with trevally. We left both lines out for approximately an hour. My line with the mackeral bait caught 5 nice sized gurnard on the standard traces and 3 on the red floating bead traces.

The other line was only set at 550 metres out and came back with 25 empty hooks. I was surprised that we were the only kite fishers on the beach this day.

There was however one kontiki fisher who put his line out about an hour after we arrived on the beach but I don't know how many fish he caught.
