Kite Sail - Flexiwing Skyhook Instructions

The Flexiwing Skyhook is a kite sail designed specifically to be flown in conjunction with the Flexiwing Kite.

It will increase the amount of available fishing pull in light winds as well as increase the tacking ability of the kite.

Similar to a spinnaker on a yacht, the Flexiwing Skyhook more than doubles the sail area available and should only be used in offshore winds of up to 20 knots or when tacking is required.

Delta kites lose fishing pull the further off the wind they are flown (e.g. the more the kite is tacked the less pull the kite provides).

The skyhook is a non-directional sail kite which is ideal for light wind areas, night fishing, or punching your gear out through high surf, strong rips and long shore currents. It is a strong, lightweight kite sail which cannot be flown on its own. It is very efficient and top performance can be achieved in light winds with perfect adjustment.

Sail Kite Skyhook Pack

  • The Flexiwing Skyhook kite Sail is supplied with the following
  • 1 x Flexiwing Skyhook
  • 1 x Pre-tied dacron tail rope
  • 1 x 6 kg nylon safety trace
  • 1 x 4 inch handspool complete with a 31 kg nylon kiteline extension and a pre-tied dacron cord insert

Assembly

Unwrap the cord from around the skyhook (do not untie any knots). The white fibreglass rod is fixed in place at the bottom end of the skyhook and is loose at the top end. Insert the top end of the fibreglass rod into the black "T"section on the leading edge of the skyhook.

Stored on the 4" handspool is a 31kg nylon kiteline extension and a pre-tied dacron cord. At the end of your existing kiteline you should have a coastlock clip or some other quality clip which you would normally attach to your Flexiwing Kite. Attach the dacron cord from the handspool directly to the clip at the end of your existing kiteline and unwind the dacron cord and nylon from the handspool. At the top end of the nylon section you will find a pre-tied coastlock clip. Connect this coastlock clip to your Flexiwing kite.

Hold the Flexiwing Skyhook with the vertical fibreglass rod facing away from you. There are two coastlock clips attached to the T section on the leading edge of the skyhook. Securely attach these two clips to the top two loops provided in the Flexiwing dacron cord insert.

At the bottom of the Flexiwing Skyhook sail there is a tail rope with a safety trace and coastlock clip attached. Attach this coastlock clip to one of the three loops provided at the lower end of the Flexiwing dacron cord insert.

Adjustment of the tail rope will alter the skyhook's performance. If the tail rope is set too low the skyhook will pull the kite down and reduce your maximum available tacking angle. If the skyhook tail rope is set too high it will lead the Flexiwing kite and may do loops or make the kite unstable.

Perfect adjustment is when the kiteline looks to be in a direct line from the skyhook to the kite when flying at its full fishing height. This is best seen by walking down the beach after launching the kites and viewing them in flight, from the side.

The Flexiwing Skyhook kite sail is a lively kite. Normal flight characteristics for the skyhook are for it to search for wind from side to side but should not do massive loops while flying at the full fishing height. Any looping which may occur while launching should be ignored.
