Te Arai Point
Stay clear at least 500 metres either side of the point, the rest of the beach is clear.

Strong easterly blows can sometimes cause large masses of weed to be washed ashore and causes problems for Bottom Longline Rigs.

Floating baits from Dropper Rigs are best under these conditions or wait a couple of days after the wind changes around to allow the beach to settle and the kelp and other seaweeds to disperse before setting Longlines.

A successful alternative to floating baits is to use the Running Float Dropper Rig system. This is highly effective as the weed does not deter the fish but this system keeps the baits clear so the fish can find the bait.

Beach access on either side of Te Arai Point allows kitefishers to fish the side which best suits the wind direction. Minimal tacking is required on the northern side of the point in a good southwesterly wind.

The southern side of the point is fished best with a straight westerly. These winds allow you to set your gear close to the beach access and angle it away from the rocky point without having to travel too far up or down the beach.

Te Arai Point Catches

A top winter fishing spot with plenty of snapper, gurnard and kahawai year round.

More frequent catches of john dory and kingfish during the summer months.

Ideal for all kitefishing methods. Particularly exciting fishing from December to February for Dropper Rig fishers targeting kingfish.
